Silver Watches

The allure of silver has been around since ancient times.

The principal market for silver watches is in women and men dress watches. Stylish ladies sterling silver watches are always in demand as a fashion accessory. These watches usually have a hallmarked silver case and accompanying bracelet. Ladies watches come in many different strap styles; bangle, bracelet or black suede strap are a few of the more popular styles.

The allure of silver has been around since ancient times, when man learned how to separate silver from lead. This metal was discovered soon after copper and gold. Silver was deemed the next best metal to perfection after gold by the Egyptians. Its malleability and ductility make it ideal for ornamental purposes.

Sterling Silver refers to silver that is 92.5 percent pure. The silver fineness should be stamped on the metal, sometimes accompanied by the initials of a designer or country of origin as a hallmark. A protective coating may also be added to prevent tarnishing. To make sure that silversmiths didn't cheat by selling poor quality alloys, authorities introduced a quality mark in the form of a hallmark. The English were the first to use a silver standard in under the regency of Henry III. Antique silver watches can be dated today by these hallmarks.
