Talking Watches

Talking Watches are not just for Grandma.

Talking watches are a necessity for those who are blind or visually impaired. At the push of a button, the watch announces the current time for us. They also provide useful functions to run our daily routines more efficiently. Talking calendar watches announce the time, day of the week and date. The audible voice can either be a woman or man, and can be bought in different languages too. Talking watches for the blind in men and women models can be purchased with these features in all the different styles. Easy to use, the watch's voice guides the wearer through the programming of the time and alarm functions.

The talking watch was invented, though not in its modern technical form, back in 1895 by a Swiss watchmaker. The watch had a mini record type disc that played a pre-recorded voice on the hour and 15 minute intervals. It also had an alarm that yelled, "wake up!" Though this watch doesn't have much in common with the new advances in electronics that have paved the way for the current talking watches, the concepts are similar.

The heart of the modern talking watch is the voice chip. The invention of this digital chip, and its subsequent miniaturization allowed for it to be assembled in small inexpensive watches.

These watches have found a market outside of the visually impaired niche. Many people have found them useful and use them as everyday watches. Children's talking watches have become a hit with children who may not be able to read yet. Disney's Mickey Mouse talking watch Says, "Hey look at the time!" and "How you doing!" The market for this type of watch could be filled with many exciting products in the coming years.
