Watch FaceWatch Faces - Put on your best face! There are a multitude of watch faces that adorn today's timepieces and they fall into two basic classes; analog and digital. With the arrival of the 20th century, demand for wristwatches multiplied around the world.Analog Watch FacesThe complexity of clock making became precise and intricate with the arrival of the analog pocket watch and its successor, the analog wrist watch. This styling utilized a watch with a dial, hands, and numbers or markers that present a total display of 12 hours. Analog faces may be minimalist with no markers at all or extremely complex. They may also be decorated with patterns or in some cases with precious stones.Digital Watch FacesThe digital wristwatch was preceded for a short time by the LED digital wristwatch that entered the consumer market in the early 1970s. To conserve battery power, the display was switched on by pressing a button. LED watches were popular for a time, but were eclipsed by the LCD watches introduced soon afterwards. These LCD watches used far less power than the LED types and could show the time constantly. Digital watches enabled consumers to have features that are not possible on an analog watch.Analog-Digital Watch DisplayThis watch shows the time by means of an analog display as well as a digital display. The analog display has a traditional dial with hour, minute and second hands. The digital display shows the time with a liquid crystal display. This feature is usually found on sport watches.Different types of face numerals and hand configurations are available to the consumer. Roman numerals are popular, as well as place maker numbers at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. Lighting of the face can be achieved by luminescent hands, or by an activated light. |
